Unit 302 · Electrical Science · LO2
◧ Exam question  [ 4 marks ]
Explain the relationship between power factor, kW and kVA for an inductive load, and state one method used to improve a poor power factor.
Power factor is the ratio of true power to apparent power. A low power factor means you draw more current than needed for the load. You can improve it by adding capacitors in parallel.
✓ Meets the standard — 4/4 marks
Model answer: Power factor (pf = cosφ = P/S) is the ratio of real power (kW) to apparent power (kVA). An inductive load causes a lagging current, giving a pf below 1. The fix — power factor correction — typically uses capacitor banks wired in parallel to counteract the inductive reactive power (kVAr), reducing the kVA demand and current drawn.

Why it works

Revision built for how Level 3 is actually tested

Most revision materials give you flashcards and past papers. The problem: Level 3 written papers are marked on depth, not keywords. We fix that.

Written questions, properly marked

Unit 302 and assignment units are written — not MCQ. Our AI marks your written answer against the actual assessment criteria, then tells you exactly what you missed and why.

Pinpoints your gaps

Wrong or shaky answers get a mini-lesson on the specific concept you missed, then a fresh question on the same learning outcome. You don't move on until it's in.

Timed mocks for MCQ units

Units 201, 301, 303, 304, 305 all use the e-volve multiple-choice test. Our timed mocks mirror the real format — right questions per unit, right pass mark, proportional time.

Formula sheet + live calculators

Every formula you need — Ohm's law, voltage drop, earth loop impedance, three-phase power — with live calculators. Printable for your revision sessions.

Tracks what you know

Rate your confidence after each answer. Weak topics go to your Revision Sheet. Solid ones move to Achieved. Your progress dashboard shows mastery per unit.

Pay for what you use

No subscriptions. Buy "braincells" — metered AI credit — and use them as you study. One braincell covers 15–18 questions and markings. Top up when you're ready.

What learners say

From Level 3 students

I'd read the books but couldn't write an answer to save my life. The marking feedback showed me exactly what the examiner wants to see.

Apprentice · West Midlands

The power factor questions kept tripping me up. After a few rounds of the AI's mini-lessons I actually understood why, not just what to write.

Level 3 student · North West

Unit 302 written paper felt completely different after using this. Worth every penny — did the £5 pack and felt ready before I'd used half of it.

Questions

FAQ

Is this the real City & Guilds past paper?

No. C&G past papers are copyrighted and we don't reproduce them. These are realistic exam-style practice questions written in the same style as the real assessment, covering the same learning outcomes — designed to prepare you, not to copy the actual paper.

How accurate is the AI marking?

The AI is grounded in the official 2365-03 qualification handbook and BS 7671:2018 Amendment 4. It marks against criterion-referenced Level 3 standards and corrects wrong facts rather than crediting them. It is very good — but not a qualified assessor. Use it to identify gaps; your college assessor has the final word.

What are braincells exactly?

Braincells are your AI credit. Each question generation and marking uses a small amount of AI compute, which costs money. Rather than a subscription, we charge for actual use. 1 braincell = roughly 15–18 questions and their marking — most students find a £5 pack more than enough for a focused revision session.

Does my progress save if I close the browser?

Yes — progress saves to your account automatically and syncs across devices when you're signed in. You can also download a portable save code from the Progress tab as a manual backup.

Which units are covered?

All six main exam units: 201 Health & Safety, 301 Environmental Tech, 302 Electrical Science, 303 Fault Diagnosis, 304 Inspection & Testing, 305 Systems Design. The assignment-only unit 308 (Career Awareness) is in the curriculum view for completeness but has no AI questions.

Is my data safe?

Your password is stored hashed (PBKDF2) — never in readable form. Connections use HTTPS only. We store your email, username and study progress — that's it. See the Privacy Policy for the full picture.

Can I get a refund?

Unused braincells can be refunded within 14 days of purchase. Once braincells have been used (AI calls made), that portion is non-refundable as the underlying AI cost has been incurred. See the Terms of Service.
